Goddess In The Silence by Robert Ahanes is a collection of very vivid and detailed poems that captures many of life (and the mind's) constant contemplations. It's been a long time since I've had the chance to read some poetry, so starting back in with Goddess In The Silence is a good easy bump back into the genre. Now, while I know poetry is really subjective, and it means different things to many different people, I felt that Robert Ahanes was able to utilize elementary and simple rhythms and patterns to make a very gently enjoyable work that flowed smoothly off the tongue and didn't overtax the mind.

Of all the poems, Hellhound was probably my favorite. The way the figure in the poem was performing a self examination of sorts in the mirror spoke volumes to me. I'm a very introspective person, and this can be detrimental to me at times, because I have the tendency to examine all my past sins, deeds, and thoughts in a harsh light. I constantly try to beat myself up with what I could have done better, and I felt the same vibe from the character in Hellhound as well. That was a very fun feeling, though a little dark! Ahanes is a good writer and his poems aren't hard to grasp...just a bit of fun and reflection that could make you think and help you relate. I'd say Goddess In The Silence is a good read for poets (novice or advanced!) everywhere.

The collection features 30 poems with different structures but similar styles, poems that treat subjects such as demonic hatred, haunting past loves, euphoric fantasies or the powers of passion. From Greek goddesses to Persian heroes, the pages of Robert Ahanes' collection are filled with enchanting poems and fantastic dances of words. The poem that gives the name of the book, “Goddess in The Silence,” introduces readers to a world of puppet masters and silent goddesses. “The Hellhound” speaks of demonic creatures and the shadows of past love and “On the Poem’s Stone” creates emotions in readers with its vivid descriptions of things to come. My favorite out of the 30 poems is “Symphony of Silence,” a marvelous short poem that takes you to the land of violins and masters of red symphony.

Robert Ahanes' Goddess in The Silence reminds me a lot of Edgar Allan Poe’s writings, Leonard Cohen’s poems and songs, and of Dante’s Divine Comedy. But even with these resemblances, his writing style is pure, unique and charming, and sends readers back to the times when poetry was about something more than free verse and modern subjects. Whether you are a poetry fan or not, I recommend you read Goddess in The Silence; you will find familiar feelings, emotions and characters in all of the poems, all while getting reacquainting with the mythical creatures, goddesses and heroes we used to love so much.
