Gracie’s Guide: Bike Safety is a wonderful story that children and parents can relate to. Author Angie Wilson conveys the emotions of everyone involved in the story and how they felt about bike helmets and safety equipment. Gracie, her BFF, and her mom go for a bike ride from the park on a trail around the town. They’re embarrassed that their mom wants them to wear bike helmets, elbow pads, and knee pads. Meanwhile, Lightning Lucas is riding his new bike in the park, but he is not wearing any safety equipment—not even a helmet! Lightning Lucas knew he had an audience as he rode around the skateboard park so he did a really high jump, but crashed to the concrete below. At school the following week, he tells classmates how he thought bike helmets and elbow pads were for little kids, until he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. If he had been wearing a helmet and pads, he wouldn’t have the concussion and 14 stitches on his elbow. I’m glad the bike rules and signals were added at the back of the book to serve as reminders to us all.

Angie Wilson is an excellent storyteller who tells a story with a subtle message hidden in the story, rather than just telling us why we should wear bike safety equipment. I love how Gracie’s Guide: Bike Safety has word searches, crossword puzzles, a Sudoku puzzle, and a maze shaped like a bicycle to separate sections in the book. I feel the activities help to reinforce the story and keep the reader involved. Illustrator Ashley Teets drew the marvelous coloring pages, illustrations, and activities in Gracie’s Guide. The maze in the shape of a bicycle is especially eye-catching. Author Angie Wilson has a winning formula with her Gracie's Guide series of books; she combines a magnificent story with a subtle lesson, adds beautiful illustrations, activities, and notes to teachers or parents at the end!
