In The Light Within, author Dimal Patel shares his journey of life and his long-term struggles with depression. Born to parents with Gujarati heritage from East Africa, Dimal grew up in northern England in the city of Preston. His first experience of depression came during his teenage years, which he would later go on to describe as "The Void." After a stint in the army, he joined the ambulance service in Lancashire. The sudden death of his mother brought more grief. But his wife, Payal, turned out to be a ray of sunshine in his life. Later, fatherhood would change him as a person from the core. Throughout his battle with depression, Dimal found solace among his "Guardians," each of whom offered him different tools to overcome his struggles.

The Light Within is an intimate memoir that illustrates the importance of familial bonds and friendships in navigating the ups and downs of life. Dimal Patel recounts his personal story without holding anything back. The author recalls the challenges he faced throughout his personal and professional life, dealing with the loss of his loved ones while trying to overcome grief and depression. Between the chapters, Dimal shares anecdotes about his Guardians, people who helped him along the way on his journey to recovery and healing. I think most readers will find Dimal's relationships with his family and friends very relatable. Anyone who has lost a loved one will resonate with Dimal's experiences. His story demonstrates that resilience, love, and human connections can help people overcome some of life's biggest challenges. If you're looking for something inspiring, I highly recommend this book.
