Grand Masquerade by Stephen Perkins is a suspense novel that brings terror and the supernatural together in one almighty clash. Richard Madden, CEO of Morningstar, and Senator Graham Barkley may look to the public as though they are at loggerheads but, secretly, they are working together. Their plan is to flood a small town in Vermont, evacuate everyone, and place them in a federal camp where they will be injected with Minerva, a new mind control and surveillance drug. They visit the town on an apparent hunting trip, but things soon start to go wrong. They didn’t realize that the town is situated above an ancient ley line guarded by The Others, but they are about to come face to face with their worst nightmare. People are disappearing and it doesn’t take long for the sheriff and the local playboy to discover what the Senator and his sidekick are up to. There are strong forces at play and a good chance that no-one will survive to tell the tale.

A combination of terror, supernatural beings, political discourse, and thrilling action, this book is full of intrigue and will keep you engrossed all the way through. The characters are excellent, well developed as real people that you can relate to in a unique plot where the tension builds gradually but steadily. There are a couple of seemingly unrelated stories that intertwine as the plot unfolds. The author has an incredibly descriptive way of writing, making you believe you are there with them. It is clearly written and recommended for all fans of suspense and supernatural thrillers; you could even be forgiven for thinking you have stumbled on a Stephen King novel.
