Gunner Gets Lucky by Karl Riemensperger is a tale about the musings of a dog going through changing circumstances. When suddenly uprooted from the farm where he was staying, Gunner dreams about more fulfilling possibilities. His transport in a vehicle filled with two dozen barking dogs was more unpleasant than upsetting. Upon arrival at his destination, Gunner discovers a longed-for situation. His reactions to all that he experiences are the hub of the story. While the plot takes place over a relatively short time, it takes account of an array of imaginary considerations. The changes that occur and Gunner’s reaction to what this difference could mean enhance what feels like a genuine portrait of a gentle dog seeking a forever home.
When the young reader learns about a cherished memory that revives Gunner’s hopes, they will likely become part of his cheering section. The sequence of revelations is simple in tone but life-changing in impact. The writing is clear, crisp, and follows a credible progression of events. Karl Riermensperger's skillfully created simplicity in writing Gunner Gets Lucky is one of the most compelling reasons it will keep a child's attention up to its satisfying ending. Although others are involved in the story, what makes it unique is its primary focus on Gunner’s thoughts and feelings. The author creates a path of understanding to what a dog may think and feel. Eager and enthusiastic young readers will ultimately realize why Gunner is, indeed, lucky.
