Do you have a hat for every day of the week? In Hailey’s Hats by Donna L. Martin, young readers are introduced to Hailey, a girl who believes she has a hat for any adventure that awaits. She has fancy ones, floppy ones, tickly hats, and so many more. All the while, readers join her in the fun she has every day. One morning, she awakens and, after searching for that day’s hat, she realizes she may not have one to go with her favorite boots or for burying treasure. Whatever will she do? Will she be able to solve the problem? This charming story will have children relating to her love of discovery and coming up with solutions of their own.

After reading Hailey’s Hats by Donna L. Martin, one thing is obvious: Hailey is a young girl full of personality and imagination. As an educator, I really appreciate how this story encourages kids to explore self-expression and identity in playful ways. It’s a quick and cheerful read that invites conversations about individuality, confidence, and joy. Teachers or parents could extend it by having students design “personality hats” to represent who they are, or by creating a week of themed hat days tied to character traits like bravery, kindness, and curiosity. The rhythmic text and engaging illustrations by Nimra Junaid make it perfect for circle time, early literacy lessons, or social-emotional learning discussions. Young readers who enjoy stories about dress-up, creativity, or learning to love who they are will adore this story. This book beautifully reflects Dolly Parton’s words: “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” I highly recommend it.
