Rylan Arnett has survived another battle with his clan’s greatest enemy, but the danger isn’t over yet. Although severely injured, Rylan manages to escape a group of English soldiers searching for him and ends up hiding behind the shed on a meager farmstead. Heart of the Highlands: The Wolf follows Rylan’s adventures that only heat up after meeting Fallon Montgomery, the young woman who owns the farm. Alone with her young son and an old man, Fallon is at the mercy of the local English lord, who has his own plans for her. When Rylan comes out of hiding after the English unit leaves, Fallon’s first instinct is to fight, but she sees that Rylan is hurt and decides to take care of him. This is the beginning of a convoluted tale that is Book 2 in the Protectors of the Crown Series by April Holthaus. Unanswered questions, years of secrets, and political intrigue keep the characters moving like pieces on a chess board as Scottish clans and the King of England play out their desires, using all those around them as mere pawns.
Well-described settings, realistic characters, and a subtle yet steady rise of passion combine to make Heart of the Highlands: The Wolf by April Holthaus an exciting story. Never knowing who is on which side maintains tension and some revelations come as tremendous surprises. With a large cast of characters, it may be better to read the Protectors of the Crown Series in order, but Heart of the Highlands: The Wolf is still an excellent story, especially as the heat between Fallon and Rylan eventually explodes to their mutual satisfaction.
