Maya Evans thinks love is for fools and suckers, and she’s not afraid to tell anyone who’ll listen. At least that’s what she wants everyone to believe, but the moment her bestie delivers the news that she’s been invited to co-host the Love Debate, suddenly she’s shy about sharing her opinion. Hearts, Hypes & Other Hoaxes starts with Maya and her brother having a hilarious conversation about the common denominator in her failed relationships, and from there, the entertainment doesn’t stop. You see, Maya’s co-host is a bookstore owner, Samir, who she thinks lacks personality. He’s a little uptight, but as Maya gets to know him, she finds that relationships aren’t all she might have been wrong about.
Hearts, Hypes & Other Hoaxes is a story I didn’t know I needed in my life. Maya and her friends are sassy and hip, and really hilarious. The author presents a full cast of quirky small-town characters that make this story so much fun. Maya is a great heroine; she’s smart and sarcastic, and she uses humor to deflect, which I am a big fan of. She is the perfect counterpoint to Samir, who is laidback and serious, and when they’re together on the page, it is just great. I really loved the way she found herself as she took the Love Debate more seriously, forcing her to examine her own stance on love. Myunique C. Green has crafted an entertaining tale of friendships, small-town antics, and finding the unexpected right in front of you.
