Hidden Between the Lines: A 19th Century Historical Romance by Sally A. Laughlin is the story of two innocent women who were thrown into terrible circumstances. Lady Rachel was looking forward to meeting the dashing Lieutenant Phillip Prescott when her dreams were shattered by her father, Lord Ramsford. He tells her she will be married to the old yet rich Lord Symington so that he can pay off the family’s debts. But Lady Rachel escapes with Phillip. Instead of Rachel, Lord Symington marries her cousin Lady Edith and now Edith has to make do with the horrible man. She must produce an heir for the old lord and please him so that he leaves her be. But when the two cousins get to know about each other’s fate, they realize that they are not so different. While Rachel has to face her problems, Edith has to plan her escape. Will these two women be able to get out of the mess they have found themselves in?
Hidden Between the Lines is such a beautiful story of courage, of fighting, and believing in yourself. Edith is a brilliant protagonist. She is smart, resourceful and she knows how she can get herself out of the mess her life has become. I hated Lord Symington with a passion. I wished Ian did more to protect his relationship, but he was conscious of his status. The prose and the suspense were like being on a roller coaster ride. I loved how Sally A. Laughlin took the story higher and higher with each page and allowed the reader to become fully invested in Edith’s story. I was waiting with bated breath to see if her plan would work out or if she would get caught. The emotions were high at points and the pace was fast, yet it was perfect for the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
