It is fall 1974. Emily Wells and her partner, Thomas Findlay, an ex-lead member of a popular band, have arrived in Alaska seeking a fresh start. The couple had had enough of the chaotic life they lived in San Francisco, which was full of parties and substance abuse. They settle in the wilderness and decide to build a cabin in a place called Dead Horse Hill. However, as they dig up the place, they not only uncover a human bone but also realize someone strange lurks in the woods around them. Soon, Emily is about to learn the history of the bone. It involves a tragic love story that dates back to 1927, when a grand hotel near the hill, now out of operation, was in its glory days and served travelers of the Alaska railroad. If you are looking for a historical mystery flavored with drama, suspense, jaw-dropping plot twists, and a poignant back story of tragic love, Hill of Dead Horses by Sarah Birdsall is a worthy pick. The storyline is told through a dual timeline, which transported me back and forth between 1927 and 1974. As I followed Jackson and Sophia’s story, I got a clear picture of what life was like in the Russian Orthodox villages on the Alaskan islands. It was a terrifying time for women to be alive, especially those who were vulnerable like Sophia and her mother. It broke my heart reading about the abuse she suffered at the hands of a respected church leader, who was supposed to protect her. The story highlights how church leaders misused their authority in the twentieth century, the dilemma victims of sexual abuse faced when seeking justice, and the struggles drug addicts and their loved ones go through.
