Hoe Fiction II: The Sauce by Ashley M. Hardy is a graphic and true portrayal of formidable women as they each fight their own battles to survive in a town filled with cruelty and disorder. We follow Lena as she attempts to bring order and harmony to her dysfunctional family. Desi has a business plan that she is determined will succeed, regardless of the obstacles in her way. Candace's love life takes a turn for the better as she reunites with someone from her past. Harriet, meanwhile, attracts some unwanted attention from an admirer and her fate puts her life in a turmoil. Follow these strong-minded women as they strive to stay alive in this dark, unforgiving town.

The author has a natural talent to create a dark backdrop to this story. The book follows four fantastic gritty female characters, as they try to survive in a town that has no forgiveness. The action is continuous and the story is always moving forward with action and emotion. There is hard-hitting realistic dialogue and a great deal of attention has been put into building good characters. There are scenes and references to sexuality, but these were definitely needed for the sentiment of the story. The book gives an honest account of the lifestyles and values of the gay community and the homophobia that surrounds them. The usual stereotypes and clichés were dismissed, and the excellent story line kept my interest until the final chapter. The subject matter was brave and superbly executed. I loved reading a story with such strong and vibrant female characters, especially Candace. I loved this book and would read more from this author.
