The jays are laughing at her and mocking her as Collie attempts to find a way past the brokenness which came upon her when Dugan was lost at sea in Hope Rises from Ashes by L.F. Falconer. As destiny takes her on a new winding path, the tinker’s daughter is very much aware of the mockery of fate. Tied to a child who is frozen in the horror of his father’s death upon the road to the Tillaman Realm, a charismatic knight named Morgan who offers sanctuary and protection at the price of her dignity, and a winter snow that renders any form of escape useless, Collie is locked into a hopeless destiny. Though her hope is gone, she is bound to a man that she does not trust, and she is entangled in a ruthless world of brutality and greed. Destiny always has a way of taking a sharp turn in the moment that all seems lost.

L.F. Falconer paints a portrait of darkness and despair within Hope Rises from Ashes in which the reader is taken into a place of complete hopelessness. Every dark turn upon the path from the attack upon the road that is the beginning of the darkness leads to the emergence of a very unexpected deliverer and a resurrection out of the ashes of despair. The mocking of the jays and the bleakness of Collie's fate will seize readers and hold them in the very same spell. However, throughout the book, readers will be haunted by the tiny point of light glimmering around the edges. Brooding, spell-binding, and masterfully written; Hope Rises from Ashes will take you on a somber journey with the mockery of the jays in your ears and the glimmer of hope in your heart.

Collie was running from Donnel when a salt trader and his son came by and gave her a ride. While travelling, the mysterious Seret appeared and killed the salt trader, leaving the kid in Collie’s care. They were walking away from the catastrophe when two knights appeared and helped Collie and the kid, bringing them to Sark. With no money or any possessions to sell, Collie chose to be a madam to Morgan, one of the knights who helped them, so she can stay in the place. Natt, the salt trader’s son, was put in the care of the Chief Warden of Sark. Collie left Donnel to run away from her heartbreak but it seems that she’s heading for more with Morgan. Find out how Collie’s story ends in Hope Rises from the Ashes by L.F. Falconer.

I should have read the first book before Hope Rises from the Ashes so that I would know what happened before. Although I still understood the story, and it is a very good one, it makes me want to read Hope Flies on Broken Wings (book one) much more. The setting of the book is magical and reading it made me feel I was in the place. The story is also like a fairy tale but with more frightening problems and conflicts. Some scenes were harsh and looked hopeless for the characters. But everything was resolved towards the end. L.F. Falconer is a good storyteller and the book made me look in the dictionary many times with some new and interesting words.

In this dramatic sequel to Hope Flies on Broken Wings, Collie flees from Donnel into the Tillaman Realm. There she is trapped in a precarious situation between two knights, Morgan and Thoren, while longing for her lost love, Dugan. Hope Rises from the Ashes is a fascinating fantasy tale woven together with romance and even historical elements by L.F. Falconer.

This is a heavy, mature tale. There are some parts of the story that I feel could have been in a lighter mood. The life of the protagonist, Collie, is hard and at times I wish she had more boldness rather than innocence. Be that as it may, I cannot deny that the dark and profound concept is fitting to the premise and setting of the story. The characterization is exceptional where every character has depth and is able to evoke readers’ emotion. I sincerely despise Morgan and I find Thoren’s loyalty to his brother is too subservient.

I am so used to reading books that are written in past tense. Therefore it took me several chapters to become comfortable with L.F. Falconer’s writing style which is in present tense. In the end, I found Falconer’s prose actually allowed me to immerse myself deeper in the story as a reader and I enjoyed it very much. All things considered, Hope Rises from the Ashes is an intense tale that may not be the kind of lighter fantasy with undeviating happy endings that some readers are looking for. Even so, this is a great work from Falconer and I intend to read the previous book, Hope Flies on Broken Wings.
