Hot Set (Behind the Scenes Book 1) by Leslie O'Sullivan sees Gilly Bettencourt leave her no-good boyfriend and dead-end copywriting job to work as a scriptwriter on The Chieftain’s Son, which is a romance show filmed on location in Ireland. She immediately falls for Jack O’Leary, who plays the heartthrob hero. Unfortunately, the production’s public relations strategy for Jack includes his staying single until the end of the second season and being seen out and about with his leading lady, the beautiful Niks. Gilly would rather not start a relationship if she is obliged to remain unacknowledged. Can she concentrate on proving her writing ability and resist Jack’s heartfelt appeals?
Hot Set by Leslie O'Sullivan is a contemporary love story that creatively infuses modern concerns with the nostalgia generated by a period television show. I loved the fact the heroine was finding her feet as a successful writer at the same time as she was developing an intimate relationship. Gilly was coming out of her shell and developing confidence in more than one area of her life. Her career and feelings were both on the line, meaning she had twice as much to lose if something went wrong! The Irish setting was fantastically romantic, and I thought the cast of characters was refreshingly practical for a group involved in show business. I liked the fact that Jack was a faithful guy and did not take advantage of his growing popularity. While Niks was initially shown as Gilly’s rival, her character presented a charming and inclusive surprise. The heat level was gauged perfectly to make the love story convincing. The book delivers a narrative that entertains the reader as it satisfactorily resolved the characters' attachments.
