Blood Rivalry is the third book of Paul Attaway’s Atkins Family Low Country Saga series. In this story, two brothers, Walker and Eli Atkins, are living in Charleston, South Carolina. Eli is a well-known chef, and Walker is a lawyer. A murder that happened fifteen years ago still haunts them; it was the murder of Eli’s high school sweetheart. Today, Walker Atkins is defending the elderly from a lending scheme orchestrated by the Dunsmore political dynasty. When he takes on Rebecca Dunsmore as a client in a bitter trust dispute, the litigation opens a can of worms and shocking family secrets that include Rebecca’s tragic birth, a twin brother, and murder. Rebecca is an environmentalist and the niece of Governor Dunsmore, and the discoveries put her life in danger. Can they get justice for the victims and dismantle the corrupt Dunsmore dynasty as they uncover fraud and corruption?
I love thrillers with strong and complex characters, and Blood Rivalry delivers on this, offering characters that are genuinely flawed, yet appealing in the choices they make. Walker is a broken man, and the past frequently touches his heart, but his quest for the truth and justice makes him one of those characters who keep readers' attention. The author succeeds in presenting different teams in a struggle that grows in stakes as the story moves forward. Paul Attaway uses courtroom strategy, covert investigations, and reprisals to scale the conflict. At times, it felt like reading a legal thriller, and at times it was a well-crafted mystery. I loved the suspense, the tension, and the cleverly developed conflict that made this story into a page-turner for me.
