How I Became Santa Claus is a cute story written in rhyme and interspersed with illustrations by Gina Cavalier. On the way home from school one day, Nick is drawn into the general store. Upon seeing a little snowman, Nick asks the man with the white beard if he can have it. However, he is told that the man has to search his heart and head overnight about this and will let him know tomorrow. Nick is offered the chance to become Santa Claus and he is faced with a huge decision that will forever change his life as he must dedicate his life to becoming Santa, bringing happiness, light and cheer to children.

Gina Cavalier has done an excellent job with her book, How I Became Santa Claus. The book is written in rhyme, making it easy to read as it is catchy and makes the story flow smoothly. I would say this is geared more for school aged children as some of the vocabulary is advanced for younger children and the story may be too long to hold the rapt attention of young children. The pencil drawn illustrations are beautiful and are fascinating to look at as they are filled with much detail; some are in color and others are in black and white. This is an enchanting story that shares the history of Santa Claus and how he became this iconic Christmas figure.
