Spectrum of Cars: Rescue and Recovery Road, by Tonya Baradaran, is an illustrated children’s book about how adults need to take care of themselves as much as children do. Little Truck and Daddy decide to visit their relative, Auntie, so they take off on a fun road trip. But along the way, Daddy realizes things aren’t going well for him. All sorts of parts are worn down, broken, or in need of repair. So instead of continuing the journey, they have to stop until the friendly mechanic can help. Can Daddy be fixed so they can continue the road trip, or is it too late?

I absolutely love this book. It is aimed at young readers, is fun, colorful, and has a very positive message: hey, grown-ups, take care of yourselves so you can be there for your kids and grandkids! The text is written in verse, so the rhyming adds to the fun. The illustrations are perfect for young readers and will keep them coming back for more. Many readers will enjoy this book, no matter their age. It helps solidify the bond of love between parents and children while showing children that adults sometimes need help along the road of life. It also gently reminds adults how important they are to those around them, and that taking care of themselves is one of the best gifts we can continue to give our children. Tonya Baradaran’s Spectrum of Cars: Rescue and Recovery Road is highly recommended. Outstanding in all aspects.

Sometimes taking care of ourselves means knowing when it’s time to ask for help. In Spectrum of Cars: Rescue and Recovery Road by Tonya Baradaran, Little Truck and Daddy Truck set off on a road trip to visit Auntie. The outing doesn’t go quite as planned when Daddy starts having problems. He’s been driving and hauling for years, and his parts aren’t in the best shape anymore. Then he gets a hole in his tire. Soon, there’s leaking oil, squeaky brakes, and an engine that won’t start. Little Truck knows his dad needs to see a mechanic and suggests they find one. There’s one on a hill, where Daddy Truck can get checked out and hopefully get back on the road. The experience also gets Little Truck thinking about what he wants to be when he grows up. Will a visit to the mechanic help Daddy get healthy and put their journey back on track?

Spectrum of Cars: Rescue and Recovery Road by Tonya Baradaran was such a cute story. I especially loved learning that the series was inspired by Baradaran’s son, who is on the autism spectrum, and that her mission includes literacy, inclusion, and autism acceptance. It’s also very relatable since children often want to help their parents. The rhyming text has a fun rhythm that can help build early reading skills. I’d love to share this with my kindergarten students because it could lead to conversations about staying healthy, asking for support, and different community workers. We could also draw our favorite part of the book. The illustrations add personality to the vehicles, making their emotions easy to see through their expressive faces. A. A. Milne wrote, “A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference.” That feels especially fitting here because Little Truck’s concern for his dad is such an important part of the story. Young readers who like cars and trucks will enjoy this one. This book would be a great choice for homes, classrooms, and libraries everywhere.

Rescue and Recovery Road is a wonderful, illustrated children’s book that continues Tonya Baradaran’s Spectrum of Cars series. Written in verse, the book is inspired by the author’s autistic son and dedicated to autistic and neurodivergent children. The story is about Little Truck, who wants to visit his Auntie and play there. His dad takes Little Truck on a road trip, and Little Truck is excited. But as they drive, his dad punctures a tire on the sharp nails in a small puddle. Undecided whether to keep going, Daddy pulls to the curb and discovers that his oil is leaking, the brakes are squeaking, the wipers and lights are failing, and the engine will not start. So, Daddy gets towed to the mechanic. But will the mechanic help Daddy to recover? Will Little Truck and his Daddy visit Auntie? And what will Little Truck and Daddy learn from this experience?

Reading Spectrum of Cars: Rescue and Recovery Road, I felt motherly love and care shine on every page. It is very challenging to raise and educate autistic and neurodivergent children, and I am in awe of Tonya Baradaran’s effort and talent for braving this challenge and lovingly crafting this awesome book. I loved the educational, entertaining, child-friendly verse that carried the story. I also admired how the colorful, full-page illustrations complemented the story and offered young readers well-deserved breaks to enjoy the visuals and remember the story’s messages and lessons. But what impressed me most was that Little Truck and Daddy were portrayed as animated creatures with faces and emotions that made them relatable. This adorable story will bring the joy of learning to children, and especially to autistic and neurodivergent young learners.

Tonya Baradaran turns an ordinary family road trip into a lesson about caring for people we love with Spectrum of Cars: Rescue and Recovery Road. Because of Little Truck’s request, he and his Daddy set off to visit his Auntie to play. But what comes next derails their cheerful mood and big plans for the day. Years of hard work begin to wear on Daddy. The leaking oil, the flickering lights, and the nuts and bolts split into two—oh no! Little Truck worries about his Daddy. Together, they go to the kindest mechanics to fix Daddy and restore him. Now, Little Truck needs to decide what to do when the grown-up he loves needs help. What can Little Truck do for Daddy to help him feel better?

This sensitive topic is handled with absolute care. Tonya Baradaran carefully picks words that suit young readers, including those on the autism spectrum. She writes in rhyme and uses simple language to tell the story. Best of all, the story treats the child readers as a helper. She gives young readers a quiet boost of confidence. Even in such a situation, a child can still do something to help, not just be an onlooker. It also shows a parent’s vulnerability, something rarely seen in children’s books. This book is dedicated to making sure that every child, parent, grandparent, and carer feels seen, valued, and loved. Spectrum of Cars: Rescue and Recovery Road is a thoughtful choice to read to youngsters with sick family members for heartfelt storytime bonding.

Rescue and Recovery Road is part of Tonya Baradaran's Spectrum of Cars series. It tells the story of a father and son who plan a road trip to visit Little Truck’s aunt. But after years of hauling loads through mountains and along roads, Daddy Truck feels older and slower. When they run into a real problem on the road, Little Truck reminds Daddy Truck of the mechanic who can check him over and make him feel brand new. As the mechanic fixes the puncture in Daddy’s tire and the leaking oil tube, he promises that Daddy Truck will soon feel brand new. When a storm breaks, they have to spend the night, and Daddy Truck gets a good night’s rest. The next morning, when the sun shines brightly, Daddy feels renewed and promises to visit the mechanic every year and look after his health.

Tonya Baradaran uses vivid, appropriate metaphors to explain various topics in a way that is accessible to young readers and readers with special needs. Rescue and Recovery Road teaches a child that their parent is older, has worked hard, and should visit a health professional, in this case, a mechanic, when issues arise. It highlights that parents usually take care of others before they look after themselves. In this story, the setting and background enhance the situations Little Truck and Daddy Truck find themselves in. The illustrations clearly show the despondency, including the nail in Daddy Truck’s tire and the oil leak. The mechanic’s shop is a beacon in their hour of need and provides the rest and treatment that make Daddy feel whole again. The rhyming language will engage readers of all ages and will make this an excellent educational bedtime read. This series is highly recommended.
