The I Ching is an ancient Chinese method of divination that brings clarity to situations. Some sources of reference use language that may be unfamiliar to Western readers, while outcomes may seem contradictory or open to misinterpretation. Xuan Wanyan brings a new dimension and revives ancient methods of working with this oracle in I Ching Divination: A Practical Study Roadmap. She focuses on the traditional Chinese Six Lines Divination system (Wen Wang Gua), which is based on the Na Jia method. For readers not conversant with the I Ching, it consists of 64 hexagrams, each consisting of two trigrams that have three lines. In terms of current practice, three coins are cast to build up the hexagram, and the result is then compared to the commentary in the oracle. Notes on the process and interpreting the outcome of a reading are provided. Questions should be specific and carefully framed, while intention is important. The I Ching should always be approached with the necessary respect. The author stresses that reading the I Ching is not fortune-telling, and readings are not a substitute for seeking professional medical assistance. When mastered, the I Ching can open new vistas of understanding for the practitioner, providing insight into every aspect of life, health, relationships, wealth, and even weather.
Xuan Wanyan has impressive credentials, and her family members have been skilled I Ching practitioners for generations. In the past, literature on the I Ching in English has been limited. This guide introduces a new system of notation that remains faithful to the original sources and is practical to use. It is a training tool that will empower readers to familiarize themselves with the I Ching and make an informed start. The quick reference tables and memory charts are well presented and essential, as committing so much information to memory will be challenging. Case studies are included with explanations. Some early history of the I Ching adds interest and provides background. A list of references and digital resources is also provided. I Ching Divination is aimed at beginners, serious students, and divination practitioners. Based on my personal experience of working with the I Ching, this level of detail may be daunting for beginners, as there are new concepts and terminology to absorb when compared to contemporary Western teaching. This book will encourage readers to study the I Ching and its symbolism at a deeper level. It will become a landmark reference work, as well as preserve the information for future generations.
