Unlike some stories that begin with a bang, The Fleet Answers: Astraea's First Signal by Ultra Lumen Studios begins with a heartbeat as a mother must choose between her daughter and her world. Generations after conductor Arien Solara closed the rescue corridor, holding her daughter Mira to save the Construct, she left the hidden fleet three final instructions: complete the rescue, protect the Construct, accept no owner. Generations later, scientist Adrian Vale watches New Lumen's artificial sky blink above the Lumen Arc. Now the sky is failing, and gravity leans toward the Prism Heart. An asteroid the size of a city moves only when no one is watching. Adrian looks for answers, following clues that lead to a place the government wants closed forever. When the fleet sends a signal beyond Astraea, and something answers, Adrian is pulled into a role he never asked for, but it might be the only path to protecting those he loves.
I love science fiction with sentient systems, and The Fleet Answers exceeded my expectations. The characters are sophisticated, and Adrian is not a conventional hero. He grows through a series of refusals, including the Conductor’s chair and any arithmetic that prices lives; his arc reflects Arien’s fragmented warnings. Other characters that I loved are Governor Kron, who carries generations of buried guilt; young Tali Venn, who sees rings turn behind the sky and gives the vast cosmic stakes a child's face; and Commander Seren, who breaks protocol to save the person inside the authority. The story is fast-paced, with action-packed scenes that propel it forward into more action: a desperate maintenance run, a fleet unfolding from stone, a city quietly glitching, a moon split cleanly in half. Ultra Lumen Studios is a great storyteller who not only crafts compelling science fiction, but also designs closed doors that lock deeper, older mysteries behind them. It was a propulsive read.
