Initium is a work of fiction in the fantasy, action, and coming-of-age drama subgenres, and it forms the first novel of The Mayari Chronicles book series. Penned by author Karen McLain, it is suitable for teen and adult readers alike. Full of big changes, new romances, and fantasy galore, we follow the path of young Medious when she is called up early to take her place in a new life as an Artemi. In a new guild with teammates to win over, Medious’s prospects don’t look great as her rare peach-colored eyes set off a series of rumors that she’s evil, dangerous, and must be eliminated as soon as possible.

Author Karen McLain has filled this exciting and atmospheric novel from cover to cover with fresh ideas, original lore, and incredible worldbuilding, and she does a great job of introducing her readers to the Mayarians and their unique culture and ways of being. One of the most enjoyable features of the work for me was the complex budding romance between Medious and Laisren, which is filled with exciting twists and all the whisperings and dramatics you’d expect from a tense first love happening in public view. Medious is a well-developed central figure who readers will quickly grow to love, and I felt that her dialogue presentation to the outside world went hand in hand with her inner struggle, showcasing her bravery, resilience, and determination even in the face of constant attack. Overall, I would certainly recommend Initium for fans of immersive fantasy dramas with fantastic new concepts to explore.
