In Jodi Swena’s memoir, Rescued by Love, the author shares her experience of growing up in a conservative Christian church that taught her to fear God’s judgment. After her younger brother dies at twenty-four, questions about salvation send Swena searching for answers, and a painful hip condition draws her toward books about spiritual healing. She eventually joins New Age channeling meetings, where a medium claims to bring messages from spirits that seem to know her personally. A disturbing experience convinces Swena that Jesus has rescued her, but returning to Christianity leaves her wondering how to trust God again. At a community church, she studies the Gospel of grace and begins to understand how much God loves her. Her memoir follows that return to faith as Swena discovers the Holy Spirit and seeks a close relationship with Jesus.
Jodi Swena’s Rescued by Love is a beautiful Christian testimony, and Swena writes with such honesty about learning to receive God’s love that her gratitude comes through in every chapter. Her writing is exceptional, particularly in the way she brings Scripture into her account to show how it shaped her understanding of grace. I thought her recollection of receiving a prophetic message at a prayer conference was wonderful, especially when she hears that Jesus has remained beside her during the hardest years of her life. Her experience during a worship service is just as moving, as she describes feeling God’s presence so strongly that she falls into a chair in tears, wishing she could remain with Him. There is also the inclusion of prompts and questions, as well as appendices that turn the whole book into an interactive experience for readers. Well written and inspiring, readers who enjoy Christian memoirs coming from an author's history with New Ageism will adore this.
