Some time ago, Joanna Potepa promised herself she would travel abroad before turning forty. But when the time came, she didn’t have the money or anything planned to make that trip. So she went with her husband and daughter to a border crossing, where she crossed on foot, leaving Poland behind to reach the Czech Republic. Over time, she gained the courage to embark on other trips, this time especially by road, which took her to different parts of Europe. The journey wasn’t always easy: her luggage was stolen, her car broke down, and she faced other unexpected challenges. However, on her travels, she discovered new customs, delicious dishes, and visited extraordinary places. In It Happened: Make of It What You Will, she not only describes her travels but also shares lessons learned and life experiences.
I loved Joanna Potepa’s writing style because it’s so natural. Her stories are short and aren’t in chronological order; instead, they develop as a friend might tell you about her experiences. She talks about places and situations with a touch of humor that lightens even the most difficult moments. Her experiences are varied; sometimes she traveled alone, and other times with acquaintances, showing that she’s an independent and courageous woman. She’s also spontaneous. In fact, one of my favorite stories is when she visited the Altamira Cave on a whim. Seeing that place was such an emotional experience that it became an unforgettable memory. It Happened: Make of It What You Will shows us that life doesn’t change from one moment to the next; it’s our decisions and our determination to keep moving forward that allow us to grow.
