Jack's Train Day by Sarah Tinney follows the adventures of a young Australian boy who loves riding on trains. Jack absolutely loves to dangle his legs from the window of the Puffing Billy. He also likes to listen to the sound of the gears that help the West Coast Wilderness Railway climb mountains. Whenever he sees the waterfalls from the Kuranda Scenic Railway, Jack is amazed. He is awed by the Savannahlander train drivers who release native animals back into the wild. Sometimes, he likes to imagine the olden days with the Wee Georgie Wood Railway being the only link to the outside world. It's unbelievable to him that someone let him drive the train at the Victoria Goldfields Highway. But how does Jack get to ride trains all the time?
A humor-filled picture book for children, Jack's Train Day is a fun read from start to finish. As an adult, the depiction of the wild Australian terrain and all its natural beauty was my favorite aspect of the book. Sarah Tinney has built an immersive world that I think young readers are going to love. With the main protagonist being a cheerful, fun-loving boy, kids will relate to him and may even develop a liking for riding on trains themselves. Tinney's storytelling is light-hearted and engaging. I found myself chuckling out loud a couple of times while I was reading. The ending scene also took me by surprise. Illustrator Ricky Audi's artwork is another great addition to the book. It's eye-catching and pretty funny. All in all, an entertaining adventure book for children.
