In Down to the Sea by Thomas Macy, Paul Rhand works at an eldercare facility in Colorado. His ability to absorb other people's emotions overwhelms him. His unusual gift also grants him access to the Sea, a parallel realm formed from emotions created by human words. There, an empath named Mabel Myers teaches Paul how scripture can calm disturbances that influence events on Earth. After Mabel is killed, Paul learns that Al Collichio, a man he considered a friend, has entered the Sea to change the past. Al hopes to prevent the car accident that killed his daughter Kate, even as his interference threatens the lives of others. With help from his wife Peg, Paul must find a way to stop Al's manipulation of events across time, a pursuit complicated by Leviathan, a serpent whose presence spreads chaos through the Sea.

Thomas Macy’s Down to the Sea is an incredible supernatural fantasy. Paul Rhand is immensely likable, and his compassion is palpable. I love the Elder, an ancient being formed from living emotions, whose understanding of home grows through the attachments he makes. Al makes a chilling antagonist, with a possessiveness that reaches his former wife Veronica, who senses him watching from the Sea. Macy’s world-building is fascinating, particularly the way relationships give this extraordinary society a convincing inner life. Still, the cinematic descriptions steal the scene, from a city visible beneath translucent waves to towering cliffs enclosing a beach under a rainbow sky. Beautifully written and immersive, readers who enjoy Christian speculative fiction will adore this.
