Killer Whale Rock: A Boy's Adventure in the Alaskan Wilderness by Tim Garvin is a coming of age adventure for young readers. Twelve-year-old Sam Jefferson moves across the country from Arizona to Alaska and discovers that Alaska is a big wilderness, different than anything he has ever experienced before. There are whales in the ocean and bears in the back yard. Sam and his brother Roy decide to explore their new found home and this story documents those adventures. They meet crazy Alaskan characters, fight with brown bears, wrestle with halibut, and journey to the infamous Killer Whale Rock, where they learn that courage, although hard to come by, can really make an adventure all the more worthwhile.

This is a fantastic adventure story that young readers are sure to love. The Alaskan setting is beautifully described and set forth in explicit details that the reader can see, smell, hear, taste and touch. Nature comes to life like no other book. The brothers are magnificent characters and the reader will fall in love with their competitive relationship, but also relate to their tenderness and humor that is sprinkled throughout the story. The secondary Alaskan characters are also wildly funny and entertaining and really set this book apart from other mundane stories. Readers will be educated as well as entertained, so parents can encourage young readers to pick up this story and know that they are reading a well crafted story.
