In Jesus’ Story, Brian P. Sheets reorganizes the four Gospels, together with part of Acts, into one chronological account of Jesus Christ’s earthly life. Sheets begins with the announcements surrounding John the Baptist and Jesus, then follows Jesus through childhood into the ministry that leads toward Jerusalem. Parallel Gospel episodes are combined into one event, with the available details gathered under the verses that supply them. Approximate dates keep the reader aware of time, while location headings help track the route from Galilee to Judea. Old Testament passages appear where they illuminate what the Gospel writers record. Written for Christians who want to read Jesus’ life as one continuous sequence, Jesus’ Story follows the record through the cross before continuing into the resurrection appearances and final ascension.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a Christian, and this was my first time reading the Gospels. I have always found the chronology to be confusing, and because I had no understanding of it, Jesus’ Story was the perfect way for me to start. Brian P. Sheets breaks it all down, and the best part is the final week in Jerusalem, where each day receives its own section, and the movement toward the cross can be read in order. Sheets also handles the arrest beautifully by bringing John’s account of Jesus stepping forward beside Luke’s account of Malchus’s healing, so one scene has details drawn from separate Gospel books. Perhaps the best angle for me is the dated structure after Easter, which places Thomas’s encounter eight days later before the Galilee appearances and ascension. There are source references throughout for checking. I recommend this to Christian readers who want a chronological Gospel account rooted directly in scripture, and non-Christian readers who have ever been Bible-curious. Very highly recommended.

Jesus’ Story: A Simplified Retelling of the Gospels by Brian P. Sheets is an intriguing retelling of the life of Jesus. In this book, the author retells the events that happened in the four Gospels as a continuous chronology. In other words, instead of jumping from the gospel of Matthew to Mark, Luke, and John, the author skillfully intertwines all those events into one consistent story, maintaining all the details mentioned in the Holy Scripture. The most famous events, such as preaching, performing miracles, delivering parables, the crucifixion, and the resurrection, appear in a logical order. This makes the chronology of events much clearer. Merging the same stories into one single narrative, along with numerous biblical citations and appendices, makes this book easily readable for everyone who wishes to learn about the Gospel.

Author Brian P. Sheets has done a wonderful job of producing a useful piece of work that makes the Gospels easier to comprehend for both new and long-term readers of the Bible. The chronological arrangement greatly reduces any confusion that one might experience in having to go through four separate books as the story of Jesus unfolds from start to finish continuously. I found the combination of the information provided in all the Gospels by the author to be very well done. I think this will help people understand the Gospels better and make it accessible for people who want to read the Bible. It is easy to understand, clearly written, and is done in a way that respects the biblical passages. I love that the narrative can be used for devotional study, group study, or simply for casual reading. Many references and appendices will be helpful to the reader who wants to learn more about the topic without disrupting the main narration. I would highly recommend it to anyone curious about the Gospels. Jesus’ Story is the perfect way to connect with Jesus and learn more about him at the same time.

Brian P. Sheets’ Jesus’ Story: A Simplified Retelling of the Gospels is for anyone who wants a chronological, harmonized history of Jesus. The book brings together the stories of Jesus from the four different Gospels into one that gives a single account. The author uses the most accessible Good News translation to arrange the events of Jesus’ life chronologically, starting with the Annunciation and Birth of Jesus and walking readers through Jesus’ public ministry to his Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension. The timelines of these events are also indicated; for instance, 5 BCE for Jesus’ birth and 33CE for the crucifixion. Sheets does a great study of the Bible and eliminates repetitive accounts while merging parallel passages, presenting a coherent biography that captures Jesus’ works, teachings, and miracles as a continuous story.

The book addresses the synoptic problem, the challenge faced by scholars when it comes to explaining the differences and similarities in the four Gospels through editorial synthesis. I understood how accounts that are unique to a specific evangelist fit perfectly into the bigger picture. For instance, Brian P. Sheets skillfully places narratives and events found only in John’s Gospel, such as the Samaritan woman at the well, the wedding at Cana, and the raising of Lazarus, within the Perean and Galilean periods. The Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son are peculiar to Luke’s Gospel, and together with Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount, are integrated into the geography of Jesus’ travels. Jesus’ Story: A Simplified Retelling of the Gospels makes the understanding of the Gospels easier, and the footnotes, together with the vast references, provide tools for understanding Jesus and his mission.

Jesus’ Story: A Simplified Retelling of the Gospels by Brian P. Sheets is a straightforward, chronological retelling of the story of Jesus as presented in the four Gospels. The book tells the story of Jesus’ earthly life, presenting it as a single, continuous narrative rather than several parallel accounts. The author uses the Good News Translation to deliver a synthesized story, presenting the Gospels from Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John as a unified timeline. It follows the story of Jesus from the prophetic utterances of John the Baptist and the Birth of Jesus by the Virgin Mary through his ministry in Galilee, his Passion, crucifixion, death, and resurrection. The book features organized data and sections that use BCE/CE notation to provide appropriate timelines for the events, highlighting Jesus’ movements across Palestine, his miracles, core teachings, and encounters with religious authorities.

Brian P. Sheets’ book is organized for readers who want to have a comprehensive understanding of biblical history and a well-drawn portrait of Jesus without having to shift from one Gospel to another. The book is exhaustively researched and features the recurrent theme of Jesus as the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies. I enjoyed reading the appendices that detail thirty-three prophecies about the Messiah, and these help to draw a link between the Gospels and the prophets. Jesus’ Story is written for the ordinary reader and biblical students who may feel overwhelmed by synoptic variations. It delivers biblical scholarship in language that is direct and simplified. The transparency in biblical references helps to distinguish Jesus’ words in italics, and the integration of Old Testament citations and more than five hundred footnotes allows readers to have a deep understanding of Jesus and his mission. This is one of the best books I have read about Jesus, and the commentary shines a light in areas where readers might experience confusion and ambiguity.

Jesus’ Story: A Simplified Retelling of the Gospels by Brian P. Sheets presents the life of Jesus as a true chronological retelling, with all four Gospels collated by event into one account. Beginning with God’s promise to Mary, the book follows Jesus as the Son sent to reveal the Father. John the Baptist prepares Israel to receive him by calling people to turn away from sin. Jesus then announces God’s Kingdom through acts of mercy that show forgiveness as the doorway into a restored life with God. Opposition rises when his authority exposes that the public religion is cut off from obedience. This streamlined account leads to the cross as the new covenant, then to the empty tomb as God’s confirmation that Jesus’ mission is true. Sheets includes everything, from the scripture and direct references to guidance and appendixes, all in one source.

Jesus’ Story by Brian P. Sheets is a chronological retelling of Jesus’ life in a continuous account for readers who want the story in order. The author makes this work through careful placement, with smooth passages from scene to scene, and reverent rewriting. His movement from Capernaum into Jerusalem gives Jesus’ public teaching a readable sense of lived time. His use of the man born blind in Jesus’ ministry gives that healing a firm place in the larger account. Sheets also serves the sacred material he retells. His handling of the Bread of Life discourse preserves its theological importance, while his later use of the light and shepherd passages shows how each teaching speaks more fully when placed in order. Sheets gives familiar Gospel material an accessible reading path that honors its sacred source, making this book useful for readers meeting the Gospels in one linear procession.
