In Lacie’s Moon by Natcole Staskiewicz, we are introduced to a little girl whose mother is sad after losing two important people in her life. Lacie doesn’t quite understand death and it makes her upset to see her mother sad. She tells the moon that she wants her love back. She falls asleep as her mother tells her a story about another little girl. Suddenly waking up to find herself being carried up to the moon by beautiful beams, Lacie was in awe of everything. Meeting the moon, she finds out that the moon carries a lot of love. He shows Lacy the hearts that he had collected, whether they are living or not. Taking Lacie on an adventure, the moon asks her what she would do if he gave her the love back. The little girl knew that she’d make every moment count, letting them know how much she loved them.
I thought Lacie’s Moon was a beautifully written children’s book on loss. A lot of people think that it’s difficult to try to explain death and dying to a young child and oftentimes it’s not talked about. I remember when my brother tragically passed at 20. I was 4 and no one sat me and my younger brother down to explain why he wasn’t coming home. For years I didn’t understand what happened and I only wish I'd had a book like this to read as a kid to help put my emotions and confusion into words. Natcole Staskiewicz has done a wonderful job with Lacie’s Moon. It’s a book I will definitely recommend.
