Lavender Fields by Raegyn Perry tells the story of Greye and Connor, two people caught up in the world of modern day racism, bigotry and hatred. Their story, however, is about more than just that. Right below the surface — just out of reach — there is something hidden; something meaningful and significant in their shared life. The past, it seems, isn’t as buried as it should be. When they discover the meaning of their shared dreams and memories, the lives of Greye and Connor — and all those who love them — are changed forever.
Raegyn Perry has a unique talent for transporting her readers beyond the here and now. I found that I was incredibly involved in the love story of Greye and Connor. They moved me and, like a fly on the wall, I was thrilled to watch their relationship grow and evolve into something beautiful. I was just as enthralled with the story of Heath and Lacey. I won’t spoil anything for other readers, but let me say this: You’ll love this secondary story line as much as the first!
Here’s what I really liked about Lavender Fields: The characters are well drawn and perfectly relatable. Even those characters readers may choose not to like very much are complex, and readers know why and can empathize with their weaknesses. The story is believable and unique. It dips into the paranormal just a bit and there is a moment when the reader must decide, am I going to jump this broom and marry myself to the storyline? That decision was an easy one for me. I jumped the broom with enthusiasm! The twist was just enough to intrigue and entertain me without making me lose sight of where I started and with whom. Greye, Connor, Lacy and Heath are one well-oiled unit and there isn’t one thing about this story or Raegyn Perry’s writing I would change. Great book!
The only thing I disliked about the story was the honest reality that even today, sadly, racism and bigotry remain and are such an integral part of our society. As the grandmother of five beautiful interracial children, this hurts my heart. Yet, this book soothed it. Wonderful story and great characters!
