Lexi's Tale is the first book of the Ghost Girls series by David Carl. Lexi is a ten-year-old girl living in the cozy little town of Haunted Hollow, where every inhabitant is a ghost. Lexi is nervous about her upcoming birthday because it will be the day of her transformation. She doesn't know what kind of ghost she will become or the powers she will acquire. And the class bully, Jace, insists she will forever be a "bedsheet ghost." Soon, the day arrives, and Lexi discovers that she is a phantom ghost with her very own Wisp. Slowly, she learns to control her powers, assures her friends about their own days of transformation, and finally becomes friends with her older sister, Olivia. Unexpectedly, her relationship with Jace also changes over time.
Lexi's Tale is a children's coming-of-age adventure story full of mystery and intrigue. One of the things that I liked the most about this book was how David Carl introduced the characters within the setting, making the town of Haunted Hollow feel eerily immersive and lived-in. I think young readers will find it very easy to relate to Lexi and her group of friends. Sophia, Priya, and Ravi are fantastic secondary characters. And the evolving personalities of Jace, Miss Vespera, and Olivia win you over soon. Children are going to love Wisp. It's not a lengthy book, and Carl makes sure the pacing is brisk and the plot is filled with timely surprises. The book ends on a cliffhanger, and it will only make you even more eager to read the sequel. Kids will have a blast with this one!
