In the Lutzers’ book, Life-Changing Bible Verses You Should Know, they offer what I consider “situational scripture.” Rather than simply providing a list of Bible verses, they have short topical chapters of a few pages for each subject. Each chapter starts with a couple key verses related to a specific life question, such as discernment, hope, conscience, or knowing God’s will. It’s designed to read one topic a week over forty weeks and can be done individually or as part of a small group. At the end of each chapter, they have some thought provoking questions to help the reader apply what was learned.

Whether or not you currently have questions about one of their subjects, they encourage readers to meditate on and memorize scripture in different areas in order to be prepared when tough times do come. And they remind people that tough times will come for people who are truly dedicated to following Christ.

A few themes emerged from their writing. Recognizing that many Christians do not live their lives any differently than non-Christians, this is their guidebook on how Christians need to be living in order to be set apart. They challenge believers to look to the Bible, rather than culture, to guide their lifestyle. The points in the book are very easy to understand, which makes it especially helpful for people who are unfamiliar with the Bible. However, those who have been Christians for a while will still benefit from the Lutzer’s teachings.
