Life by Alysa VanderWeerd is a beautiful collection of religious poems, featuring themes like the purpose of life, love, devotion, union with God, integrity, faith, and a lot more. These poems read like psalms and they have ample biblical references and imagery, allowing the reader to step into a spiritual atmosphere that is both delightful and nourishing. In the presentation to these poems, the author shares with readers how they came to be written: “I have a habit of writing my prayers to God. It helps me focus and concentrate.”

They are a reflection of her intimate moments and conversations with God, moments of utter effusion as she opens her heart to receive God and as God reveals the depth of His love to her, showing the path she should walk through His living word. To be righteous in the eyes of God, whether people acknowledge you or not, is the secret to spiritual joy and the author captures this truth in one of the poems when she writes:

“You keep reminding me,
That it doesn't matter what people think.
You are pleased with my integrity.

Integrity shines in the dark.
It's our character.
It's our heart.”

In this collection, we encounter a searching soul who, like most of us, feels a disturbing emptiness, but who has understood that God alone can fill that emptiness and she opens her heart to Him in utter honesty. The faith of the author is captured in a language that is simple — so simple that it lends credibility and elegance to her writing. The author has a unique style which combines a popular conversational tone with measured rhythm to create the sense of intimacy in her encounter with God. Alysa VanderWeerd’s poetry has a strong appeal to Christians and anyone seeking to nourish their faith and find words to address God. A gorgeous gift of a living faith, indeed!
