“Spur of the moment was one way of defining Dean. He lived in the moment and if an idea struck him with friends in mind, which was the norm, we usually went along for the ride. It was always an adventure. Life’s too short was his mantra.” Russ recalls the first time he met his best friend and the life that they had gone through so far. During the summer of 1981, they decide to make one last move in their semi-vagabond life to the beach.

Life’s Too Short by Russell Waterman is a reflective and realistic short story about friendship and life itself. The vibes of the late 60s, the 70s and 80s are easily felt as some mentioned songs will give readers the right ambiance and evoke the memories and mood of the selected eras. The writing style is straightforward but sufficiently emotive. The playful and funny moments are well balanced with the poignant ones. I tried to comprehend what really happened in the end, recalling some historical facts that may or may not have inspired the event. Then I figured out that it didn't really matter. The ending was undoubtedly glorious as characters Russ and Dean did what they wanted to do and said what they wanted to say. It reminds me of one of Walter Winchell's quotes: "A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out." All in all, Russell Waterman's Life’s Too Short is a fast, heartfelt read with the right amount of sentiment.
