A. Greenheart’s Tester follows a young fortune seeker, Tester, who agrees to escort Squirm, a talking worm, to the Edge of the World, where the ocean spills into an endless abyss. Bark, a brawler, joins the quest alongside Lily, a woman once kept by Bark as a pet frog. Their journey brings them to Port Kilu, a coastal village threatened by the Sea Wolf, a pirate captain whose glowing pendant has placed his crew under a curse that transforms them into monsters. When the pirate carries off his daughter Rabbit, Tester joins the child’s aunt, Captain White Tip, in pursuit. Their course leads into the Triangle, a dangerous region of the ocean where ships disappear. With the cursed pirate ahead of them, Tester’s expedition must venture deeper into waters that stand between him and Squirm’s destination.

A. Greenheart’s Tester is a brilliant quest fantasy, and the author has an exceptional gift for making an unfamiliar world feel tangible. The best is the Forever Caves, with glowing mushrooms casting their light over subterranean lakes. The same imagination is heightened with suspense, bringing the dangers of the ocean to life when giant starfish gnaw through a ship’s wooden mast, as cannon fire sends splinters raining onto the deck. The magic is fantastic, particularly the power markers embedded in fortune seekers’ tattoos, which briefly enhance their abilities. When Tester activates his during combat, time seems to slow around him, giving him extraordinary speed of thought at a dangerous moment. Of all the character traits, I most liked Squirm’s affectionate teasing, particularly his habit of calling Tester ‘Bokken Boy,' because of Tester's attachment to a Japanese wooden sword. Well written and immersive, readers who enjoy high-caliber quest fantasies will adore this.

A. Greenheart’s Tester follows the titular Tester, a young man in Milltown who has spent years dreaming of becoming a fortune-seeker. After fire destroys what little remains of his old life, Tester enters the local Bounty House hoping to receive the mark that will begin the future he has imagined. The result is an egg-shaped seeker’s mark carrying every color, yet no power marker appears to tell him where his abilities lie. Tester refuses to abandon the profession, so he leaves Milltown with a wooden bokken and follows the road toward Sordid, where a larger Bounty House may offer answers. A strange encounter soon takes him far from that route and into the Forever Caves, where surviving long enough to find a way out becomes his first real test.

A. Greenheart’s Tester is an incredible fantasy adventure. Tester is earnest and remarkably compassionate, taking pipsies seriously once he learns they need help. Bark is a celebrated brawler who is witty, with a crooked vocabulary that gives his conversations a distinctive voice. The world-building is massive, with much of its invention expressed through the rules governing zed. For example, stored zed powers chance-casting, with each exposure changing how the next casting behaves. The setting descriptions are superb, giving the fantasy a striking visual quality. That praise has an easy example in the Mighty Kingdom, where glowing mushroom fields surround miniature farms. The Triangle offers another beneath its night sky, where moons streak overhead above an ocean gleaming like floating zed crystals. Visually written, with humor appearing at all the right moments, readers seeking inventive fantasy are in for a treat. Very highly recommended.

Tester: An Adventure of Gods and Chance by A. Greenheart follows Tester, a young boy living in poverty who loves adventure. He wants to become a fortune-seeker, go on adventures, and become rich. But when Tester decides to leave his boring life, he realizes adventure isn't what the stories portray. Even his idols, like the Green Light, aren’t what he imagined. Tester gets a strange egg-shaped mark instead of a power marker. He is disappointed but not discouraged. Along the way, he teams up with an intelligent worm named Squirm, a lively brawler named Bark, and a chance-caster. Together they face battles and some very scary creatures. Can Tester take his destiny into his own hands? Or does Fate have other plans?

Author A. Greenheart created a funny, clever, and very well-done adventure with an underdog protagonist. I absolutely loved Tester. He’s awkward and scared of almost everything, but he keeps going anyway. He was determined to be better, to have the adventure he always dreamed about, and I couldn’t help but root for him. He was clever, sharp, and very intelligent. Out of all the supporting characters, Squirm was my favorite. The worm is quick, sarcastic, and made me laugh out loud. Bark was a great addition too. Every chapter starts with a little piece of fortune-seeker advice, and I loved how well it merged with the fantasy elements of the story. The footnotes were fun, and I looked forward to them. The Green Light was also an entertaining hero to watch. The chapters are short, and the pace is fast. I love that the action never stops and the momentum never drops. Tester is perfect for readers who enjoy brave characters and fast-paced fantasies.
