Long ago, a kind alien scientist named Xerix traveled to Earth in a flying saucer. He misreads human terminology and selects young Ethan, an orphan, to become his new off-planet companion. Instead of a passive pet, Xerix ends up bringing home a hyperactive human boy who turns life on the planet Gizmok upside down, but in a fun and unique way. The book chronicles Ethan’s upbringing as he attends alien schools, tames wild local creatures, and wins over his skeptical adoptive mother with his undeniable charm. As an adult back on Earth, Ethan continues to inspire his grandson to look at the stars with curiosity. How will the enduring love of Ethan’s galactic family help guide him through his ultimate journey?
Elly Mossman’s Lift Off is an endearing children’s book that stands out due to its deeply relatable character growth. It is highly entertaining to watch Ethan’s adoptive mother, Qantuu, transition from initial panic to fierce, protective affection for her unusual human son. The beautiful illustrations by the author capture the heartwarming character expressions, enhancing the emotional depth of every shared family meal and alien vacation. The bonds of friendship Ethan builds with childhood friends like Zigmin show a wonderful understanding of how children connect regardless of their backgrounds. The book maintains a bright, uplifting spirit that keeps you smiling through every chapter as the characters face new cultural hurdles together. In the end, the story proves that a parent’s devotion is a universal language spoken across the galaxy. I’m certain that fans of children’s sci-fi graphic novels will love it. Very highly recommended.
