It’s never a good idea to gossip, especially when sharing something that was meant to be kept a secret. In Hilary Lawrence’s Loose Lips Sink Ships, the Royal Pigeon Post is the only means by which the king sends his most secret messages. It was a time well before any form of postal delivery, and certainly, there was no internet or email communication. Feeling satisfied that no one was listening, the Royal Pigeon Post shared the king’s most secret message while convalescing atop the Tweetup tree. They were unaware of a hovering spy nearby, one who would share the secret with none other than Blackbeard’s pirate gang. The result was an adventure on the high seas, one that would, indeed, sink ships.

Hilary Lawrence’s picture book, Loose Lips Sink Ships, is another grand children’s adventure based on a popular saying. Gossiping pigeons are no better than others who gossip, and the plot evolves from one gossiping pigeon who, entrusted with the location of the king’s secret treasure, unknowingly shares it with a spy from the infamous Blackbeard's gang. Told in rhyming verse, this lyrical treasure will have young readers enthralled as they follow the plot that leads to disaster. The illustrations by Katherine Summerville are bright, bold, and colorful, adding another dimension to the story. At the end, there’s a list of some interesting facts about pigeons as well as an explanation of the origin of the saying, “Loose lips sink ships.” The key message of this entertaining, educational, and engaging read is that one should never gossip.
