It is difficult to imagine a terminal illness forming the central theme in a love story, but Love, Family, Cancer: A Love Story is just that. It is a tale of an exceptional marriage that endured, despite daunting medical and other setbacks over an extended period. When Bill Beckett met his future wife in 1993, both had emerged from failed marriages and diverse backgrounds. That was about to change. What transpired is a heartwarming story of two souls who rose above their pasts to create a new and harmonious life together with their family. However, their idyllic situation was tested when his wife Bonnie was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and the medical treatment that followed. In between, the author had to cope with periods of unemployment, relocation, and paying high medical costs, which resulted in a debt burden. The cancer later spread to other parts of Bonnie’s body and the combination of repeated surgery and chemotherapy took its toll on her health. Eventually, she lost the ability to write as the cancer affected her brain. She passed on in 2020 after 27 years together, having been supported on her journey by a devoted husband, her three sons, the immediate families, as well as the Hospice staff.
Love, Family, Cancer is a tale of fortitude, dedication, and resilience under the harshest circumstances. The writing style is warm and conversational, speaking frankly about the impact of cancer on the family, yet embracing love, companionship, and a lifelong bond. Bill Beckett wrote this account to help others in similar circumstances, and he succeeded admirably. He describes their reaction to the cancer diagnosis, finding the appropriate treatment, and dealing with the unpleasant and debilitating side effects of the medication. Bill had to take over running the household and act as a carer, supported by their youngest son Billy. Afterthoughts voiced by Bill include a plea to question the medical profession about the prescribed treatment and not to ignore the early indications that all is not well. Would there have been a different outcome? In cases of terminal illness, the inevitable questions arise. Are they sure, and why did this happen to us? That is enough motivation to live life to the full, not take your health for granted, and tick things off your bucket list while you can. The book is rounded off with poignant family photographs. It is a testimony to courage, loyalty, and love that will inspire readers. It is highly recommended.
