Sofia Nova brings us endearing fantasy fiction in Maradonia and the Guardians of the Portal. On their way home from a trip to see their family, siblings Maya and Joey Swanson are caught in a storm at sea. When the ocean wins the battle against the cargo ship, Maya and Joey find themselves stranded on an island, far from home, believing they are the only survivors. While exploring the island in search of rescue, the siblings meet an old man who sends them on a mission to locate the mermaids and protect the most important artifact there, a portal to other realms. Meanwhile, aided by the government, a group of scientists aims to locate this portal and use it for their own purposes. Maya and Joey learn they are part of an ancient prophecy and that the citizens of Maradonia can be bloodthirsty monsters.

Author Sofia Nova has created a world filled with all the elements of fairytales and the ultimate battle of good versus evil. With two teenage main characters, it is easy to find traits that are likable and relatable. The plot and pacing are good, driving the story forward through a world described with elegance. This story has more than enough action and adventure to satiate a hungry young adult reader. I found that the innocence of the main characters perfectly balanced the ruthless monstrosity of the villains. Hope and encouragement saturate the pages from start to finish, and Maradonia and the Guardians of the Portal is suitable for younger readers as well.
