In Tanya Westlake's Margarita Malevolence, Kalliope Brooks (Kallie) and her bestie, Tess Russo, are gifted amateur sleuths from Owhiro, Florida. If they play their cards right, they'll eventually become professional PIs through the guidance of their mentor, Reggie Cornwallis. Suddenly, their little coastal town is left dazed by the barbaric murder of Oscar, a homeless man and police informant, during its annual Sandcastles festival. Kallie and Tess accept the case as pro bono work and agree to help Oscar's daughter get closure for his death. As they probe deeper into their town, the police set their sights on Oscar’s cousin as the key suspect. Suspicions and evidence draw Kallie and Tess into a web of secrets, and it's up to them to solve this perplexing case. Can they uncover the real killer and prove themselves to be professional PIs?

Margarita Malevolence is an intriguing small-town murder mystery that gives readers a thorough and practical look at amateur investigation through the exploits of Kallie, the main character, and her best friend, Tess. Tanya Westlake establishes a cozy small-town atmosphere where community interactions, PI mentorship, and local antics shape the fabric of this exciting mystery. Kallie and Tess are convincingly portrayed as amateur sleuths well on their way to becoming professional private investigators. They make mistakes, learn from them, mature throughout the process, and grow in resilience. Through their persistent investigative work, the plot also explores themes like addiction, justice, career shifts, and community support. I highly recommend this fascinating tale to all cozy mystery enthusiasts.
