Todd Ockert’s Journey Home follows Lance White, a retired Navy rescue swimmer stranded in California when an electromagnetic pulse attack cripples America’s infrastructure. His closest friend, former Army Ranger Jesse Core, is stranded alongside him. With their families hundreds of miles away in Central Texas, the men set out on modified military motorcycles, hoping to cross a country where stalled vehicles block highways as armed groups claim territory. At home, Lance’s wife Heather relies on military training to protect their ranch, while Jesse’s wife Violet prepares the neighboring property for an uncertain future. Meanwhile, President James Clark attempts to rally America’s surviving military as the foreign officers responsible for the attack prepare an invasion. These men will have to use their skills to find their way back home through a land that has been transformed by new laws.

Journey Home is outstanding post-apocalyptic survival fiction. Todd Ockert keeps this fast-paced thriller loaded with intense scenes, like rifles trained on a traveler at a moonlit Colorado River crossing, and sniper fire cracking above an Ash Fork roadblock. That danger adds to the fleshing out of Jesse Core, whose selfless loyalty sends him paddling to rescue Lance. I love Heather, a fearlessly independent woman who has no problem confronting armed intruders along her ranch fence. It takes these types of veterans to face the ruthless gang targeting gun shop owner RJ with automatic fire. As violence spreads, the writing turns the settings into assets, from Tehachapi’s railway tracks fading beneath dark trees to Ash Fork’s water tanks overlooking barricaded streets. Well written and wholly absorbing, readers who enjoy intelligent survival thrills will adore this.
