Midnight Justice by Robin Dobbins follows Alex McCord, a history teacher, who is secretly a vigilante aiming to protect multiple at-risk students from gangs and systemic failure. When Johnnie Wimbush is threatened by the Reapers, McCord tries to intervene but faces resistance from his fearful grandfather. At the same time, she fights to rescue Ricky McWhorter, who is forced into drug dealing to support his siblings, determined to obliterate his suppliers and take the children into her care. As the police, led by Detective Kinstley, investigate the rise of this masked vigilante, McCord escalates her mission, targeting a gang leader named Willie Buchanan. Alongside her violent crusade, she experiences supernatural encounters offering her the chance to relive moments with her deceased first love, Mike Koehl. Torn between vengeance, duty, and her unresolved past, Alex faces the growing risk that her pursuit of justice may destroy her, leaving her to decide how far she’s willing to go.

I loved this book! Seriously, we need many more female heroes and Robin Dobbins delivers one in Midnight Justice. Secrets, destiny, and self-discovery co-exist in this arresting storyline, where McCord’s journey is as emotional as it is mysterious. Dobbins masterfully balances deep family drama with an eerie sense of fate as McCord struggles with shocking revelations about her past while a cryptic child in cowboy boots hints at an unsettling future. The writing is sharp and intelligent, drawing readers into McCord’s turmoil with action, fleshed-out descriptions, and a strong emotive core. As a reader who appreciates a good twist, I did not expect the direction the story went, and the ability to surprise me, who reads dozens of books a year, is a testament to the author's skill as a writer. The relationships, particularly McCord’s bond with Frank and her love for Mike, are deeply human. I'm glad to see the hint at more to come and look forward to what Dobbins gives us next. Very highly recommended.
