Mima's Choices by Rob Clare is an engaging storybook designed to teach young readers about the importance of making good choices. It follows Mima, a young girl who encounters various everyday dilemmas. Each choice the reader makes influences the direction of the story and encourages reflection on consequences and moral values like contentment, kindness, and responsibility. Mima faces decisions, such as whether to wake up or continue sleeping, which disrupts her morning routine. She must also confront the challenge of admitting to cheating on a test, resolving a conflict in class, being honest with her mother about her day, or providing feedback on her brother's drawing. Each decision she makes shapes her day and character.
Mima's Choices is a unique story that conveys powerful lessons about decision-making. Unlike traditional stories that follow a linear structure, this book allows the reader's choices to determine the narrative. I find this concept appealing because it stands out and creates a memorable experience. I believe both children and adults will enjoy this book, as it encourages reflection on their daily interactions with others. The story promotes empathy, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, honesty, and a sense of justice. Rob Clare emphasizes that behavior is driven by fundamental needs such as safety, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun. He also highlights that every decision offers an opportunity for growth. The book transforms reading into an active and personalized experience. The realistic artwork brings the characters to life. Overall, this is a wonderful read, and I highly recommend sharing it with your children to help them understand the importance of making good decisions.
