Can first impressions ever be wrong? A little girl spends her days reading and doing chores with her cat in Mishka’s Window Tales: The Fox Who Came to Stay by Gabriella Pereira. Her orange tabby is named Mishka. He watches the world around them from inside their glass home. One day, a fox shows up. At first, the girl is nervous. After all, she’s heard how sneaky they are. But then, she looks at Mishka. He’s calm and even seems a bit curious. So, she begins to wonder if the fox deserves a second chance. Using rhyming words, it teaches readers about patience, curiosity, and the small moments that help us see things differently. What do you think the child learned from her trusted companion?
Mishka’s Window Tales: The Fox Who Came to Stay by Gabriella Pereira immediately reminded me of my own cat. I loved how Mishka quietly stayed close to the girl’s side. He seemed to guide her simply by remaining calm. The glass house was interesting because it made me think of the saying, “People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.” It fits the story’s message about letting go of assumptions. In my opinion as a teacher, the rhymes flow naturally and would support early literacy skills. I’d use this as an after-lunch read-aloud to help settle my kindergarten class before getting back to work. It would also lead to great conversations about pets, trust, and first impressions. The kids could have fun creating their own rhyming animal stories. The soft watercolor illustrations add to the peaceful feeling. They help tell the tale without taking attention away from the text. Young animal lovers, cat fans, and families who enjoy meaningful stories will want to pick this one up. I believe this book belongs in homes, classrooms, and libraries. It reminds children that kindness often begins when we’re willing to look past what we’ve always been told.
