It is becoming increasingly difficult to find direction and fulfillment in a world that seems to be dysfunctional. Michael Lassman provides answers in Modern Man’s Search for Meaning: Finding and Living out Your Life’s Purpose. On reaching the age of 60, the author reviewed what he had accomplished, while wondering what lay ahead. He pondered whether there was more to life than growing up, being educated, establishing a career, and becoming a parent. He questions how we measure success, what legacy we leave behind, and what God’s plan may be. He suggests that world standards have changed, and that we are now out of synchronization with God. Lifestyles have become dictated by technology, television, computers, advertising, and social media. We are subjected to a data overload, driven by AI and social media. Secular has replaced Godly. It seems that we live in a vacuum, turning to solutions such as alcohol and sex. Social media encourages feelings of inadequacy. Advertising distorts perceptions. People get married for the wrong reasons and with unrealistic expectations. The author discusses the use of Ketamine, a psychedelic that can provide help when used under supervision. He encourages readers to use their spiritual gifts and unique talents as they strive to understand God.
Michael Lassman’s quest for meaning followed a personal crisis triggered by alcoholism. This led him to study the works of Freud, Jung, Adler, and Frankl to arrive at a deeper understanding. He describes his formative years, his early experiences with churches, and the social conditioning that combine to dictate adult life. Modern Man’s Search for Meaning is a perceptive look at the human condition that examines our motivations and the forces that shape our belief systems. It is a search for inner peace that will resonate with readers. Our faith is being tested. We should thus remain authentic, looking inward, to overcome fear, guilt, pride, and ego, while avoiding comparisons that do not serve. Now is the moment to change. Readers are advised to seek divine guidance, knowing that love is the ultimate goal. The meaning of life is different for everyone, but even mistakes bring us back onto the path. The writing style is concise, with solutions that bring clarity to important lifestyle issues that face us. Selected quotations and biblical texts add clarity to the wide range of topics discussed. The list of core values and gifts is particularly useful. God has provided a roadmap. It is time to reflect and follow it.
