When world events, let alone personal tests and trials, prove stressful and depressing, many people turn to substances or lifestyle changes to cope, although these are usually unhealthy and sometimes self-destructive. People of faith have always been encouraged to turn instead to the inspirational words of scripture, to the comfort of prayer and meditation, to uplifting hymns, and to supportive fellowship with other believers. Moments of Reflections: Finding Peace Within the Storm is a collection of forty-one short writings by author LaToya Murchison, who offers them to motivate and encourage others in their search for inner peace, while the “storm” of daily life rages without.
Murchison writes in an easy-to-understand, almost conversational tone as she shares her thoughts and prayers, sprinkled with bits of scripture. I can see her words helping a reader get through the day when one isn't sure that he or she can make it; or to handle grief that keeps one awake at night; or to restore the love once felt for others who have since become estranged; or to get through so many other situations in life with a smile on one’s face and trust in one’s heart. I was relieved to find that Moments of Reflections is light on doctrine, which sometimes turns people away from a church’s door. Its focus is on the simple, eternal message of unconditional Divine love. For those who have committed their lives to Christ, it’s also a call to action. For all of us, it’s a chance to reflect on the true source of our strength.
