In Alejandro Torres De la Rocha’s Mortal Vengeance II: To Reel or Not Too Real?, survivors of the Grim Cojuelo murders at Santo Domingo’s Excelsior Academy have become stars of a reality television series. Producer Shane Harper sees enormous ratings potential in their painful history, especially when Lucía Salgado, whose investigation helped expose abuses at the school, joins the cast. But reports of another masked killer soon give the program a terrifying new direction. As murders mount, former classmates begin doubting people they have known for years, while the police investigate links between the attacks and the academy’s past. Footage gathered for entertainment becomes vital evidence, and attempts to leave the country bring fresh obstacles. With their lives under constant public scrutiny, the friends face a murderer who seems determined to make their suffering a spectacle.

Fear reveals plenty about the decisions people make when they feel hunted. Alejandro Torres De la Rocha understands that in Mortal Vengeance II, giving a reality television premise a sinister psychological slasher angle. Having read the amazing first book, I was pleased to return to this world. The author handles Mario’s fractured friendships with a keen understanding of how relationships influence judgment when the murders resume. The suspense is expertly timed, particularly when someone has precious little to defend themselves with. At Lucía’s home, Alex discovers a trail of blood before confronting a masked attacker with only an umbrella. You can feel his vulnerability. At the deserted academy, the metallic scraping Mónika hears is a warning just before a scythe strikes the spot where Lucía stood. It’s enough to make anyone’s stomach drop. Readers seeking merciless psychological horror are in for a real treat. Very highly recommended.
