Mountain Whispers: Days Without Sun by G. Coleman Alderson is sci-fi with dystopian underpinnings, set in a future beset with natural calamities and dwindling sustainable resources for humanity. It’s the story of a dark and cold world. Readers are introduced to a world that is dying, to powerful characters that will do anything to survive, and deceptions that can be costly. It is a tale of intrigue and survival of the fittest, and against this desolate backdrop a community called Progress City lives the vision of Global Environmental Ethics Organization. The city is run by Agent Candler Greaves, but does he really understand what he works for? A beautiful young girl knows about the power invention, a secret in an abandoned family farm, what she calls a “game changer.” But this lonely girl, Celi Pierce, who spends her time writing about her dream of a future doesn’t know she may not live to see it. She has something that ruthless people who run her world want and they will do anything to get it.
This is a great story with a powerful setting, a gripping plot, and characters that are phenomenal. The writing is unique and the prose excellent. I enjoyed the journaling style used to develop the character of Celi Pierce and how her entries become a tool that bad guys need to access a technology that can transform the game completely. G. Coleman Alderson is a great novelist and visionary and it is interesting how he develops environmental themes in the narrative. The characters are well crafted, the conflict is strong, and the general sense of disillusionment and the game of power are brilliantly portrayed. While Mountain Whispers: Days Without Sun is a gripping, entertaining tale, it can also be read as a powerful warning of what may await humanity if we fail to look after our environment.
