When a coordinated bombing tears through the diplomatic gathering, Ryder’s instincts place him inside the investigation that follows. CIA Manila Station chief Samuel Atkinson pulls Ryder into Project GrandSlam, a covert mission operating alongside Philippine intelligence. At the same time, Gabriel Cruz activates a clandestine counterterrorism branch led in the field by Eric Madrid. Every lead points to familiar militant groups, yet the attack seems designed to keep investigators looking in the wrong direction. With President Jones still scheduled to arrive in Manila, Ryder joins the Filipino team as both governments race to identify who is preparing the next strike.
Jos Ilagan’s Project GrandSlam & The Zhongguo Orchestra is outstanding Christian espionage fiction. This fast-paced thriller is fully loaded with a bevy of intense scenes, like a covert taxi switch in Makati and a gunfight across Balayan Bay. That danger adds to the fleshing out of York Ryder, whose dedication shows when he spots children on a drone feed. I love Preacher, a COBRA operative defined by Christian conviction. It takes these types of operatives to confront the diabolical antagonist, Mallory, the Taklamakan commander directing attacks across Manila. As Mallory’s scheme crosses Luzon, Ilagan turns those settings into assets, from the Calumpan Peninsula, where a white mansion fades into evening gloom, to the Verde Island Passage, where dive lights sweep black water. Well written and exciting, readers who enjoy Christian espionage thrillers will adore this.
