What if saving a realm depended on figuring out riddles, facing strange beings, and working together? Wilds of Amaranth Part I: Save the Dog Kingdom by Sohrab Rezvan and A.R.R. Ash is a fantasy adventure game for kids ages seven and up. Players meet Nala, a druid who needs help finding her missing dog, Eugene. But there’s a lot more to this pup than they first realize. He’s a prince whose Dog Kingdom is in danger from a powerful wizard named Evrak the Shadow. This book is divided into thirteen adventures, each one bringing something new. Kids will find magical objects, explore unusual places, and encounter creatures. Plus, there are puzzles to solve. Each session has a specific goal, while “Read to the Players” sections guide the Game Master in moving the story forward. Success will take creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork. Wilds of Amaranth Part I: Save the Dog Kingdom by Sohrab Rezvan and A.R.R. Ash is a unique book. I’ve never read anything quite like it, and I found the concept really interesting. It reminded me a little of Zelda because of the maps, puzzles, and exploring. I also appreciated that kids don’t always have to fight their way through a situation. Sometimes they have to work together and find another solution. Adventure #11 was my favorite because I was drawn to the picture of the tower. I liked that each quest offered something different. As an educator, I could easily see this being used for an after-school club. The Game Master suggestions are helpful, and I loved the pre- and post-session questionnaires because they help adults see what the players enjoyed and make changes for future sessions. Plus, the handouts are another great resource. Timmy Zowada’s bright, eye-catching illustrations enhance the book. I’d recommend this to children who enjoy roleplaying games, fantasy, or Zelda. It’s also a creative approach to building teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. I enjoyed this book and thought it was a really interesting concept.
