The emotionally gripping historical novel Mule Springs Saga by Judy Hudson follows the story of Sarah “Sadie” Louise, an extraordinary young woman who embodies courage, resilience, and faith. When Sadie’s father sends her to Idaho to help out a family in need of a governess, Sadie is captivated by the breathtaking rural landscape around the Owyhee Mountains and is moved by the simplicity, love, and faith of her host family. Sadie meets Ander Gebara, a bold Basque man to whom she is immediately drawn. She falls in love with him and marries him despite her father’s protests. As she faces the impact of the Great Depression and new challenges as a frontier woman, she draws strength from her love for Ander and her faith.

Steeped in frontier life and culture, Mule Springs Saga takes readers on an enthralling, heartfelt journey they will find unforgettable. Sadie is an endearing heroine who challenges societal norms and is determined to make her own way. Hudson does a great job of incorporating the story’s main themes about faith and love into Sadie’s journey. The story takes an honest look at grief and the effects of hardship on a marriage, providing practical lessons through the characters’ lives. I found the beautiful setting immersive and Sadie's and Ander’s experiences of confronting the problems they face inspiring. Mule Springs Saga by Judy Hudson is a deftly layered historical novel with rich themes and fascinating characters. It is a beautiful offering delivered with exceptional skill that will encourage and resonate with readers.
