Chapel Perilous (Book One of the Orbis Curvarum) by B. is a mesmerizing story set inside a mysterious palace where the main character wakes up with no memory of his past or identity. His journey unfolds in a labyrinth-like world where everyone around him acts according to strict rules, their individuality stripped away, and obedience demanded by shadowy masters. As he tries to understand who he is and why he’s there, he drifts between roles—sometimes himself, transformed, guided by enigmatic figures: a blue-tinted boy, a wise hermit, and other strange characters. His quest for meaning and escape leads him through surreal chambers, divine encounters, and perilous challenges. Throughout his wanderings, the hero battles forces trying to break his spirit, finding unexpected truths about freedom, power, and the deep human need for connection and selfhood.
The writing style is inventive and atmospheric. B. keeps the pace steady, balancing unpredictable action with quiet, reflective moments. Each character is described with a unique voice, often speaking in riddles, which adds to the mysterious tone. Themes of identity, resistance, and the question of what makes someone truly free weave through the pages. The pace shifts smoothly between tense, action-filled scenes and graceful, quiet moments of reflection. I especially enjoyed the sense of wonder and strangeness that filled every chapter. For me, the most lasting impact was how the story plays with reality and illusion, leaving me questioning what is real and what it means to choose your path. Chapel Perilous stayed on my mind long after I finished, encouraging me to reflect on my journey and the importance of holding onto who you are, even in confusing times.
