Never Knew I Wanted to Be a Breast Cancer Survivor by Rebecca J. Hogue is a deeply personal account of being diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age and navigating the physical and emotional changes that followed. The memoir begins with the discovery of a lump, the denial that it’s anything more than a strained muscle, and the diagnosis. The book follows her through medical appointments, treatment decisions, surgeries, uncertainty, and the ongoing challenge of adjusting to a future she never expected. Rather than presenting only the medical side of illness, the narrative focuses on the emotional experience of living through treatment while trying to maintain ordinary routines and relationships. Rebecca reflects on fear, frustration, exhaustion, humor, and the moments of connection that helped her keep moving forward. The memoir also addresses the complicated nature of decision-making after a diagnosis, particularly for younger patients who are forced to consider long-term consequences while under emotional strain.

I enjoyed how it was written—very conversationally, as if she were speaking only to me. Rebecca J. Hogue writes directly and emotionally. She is honest about fear and medical uncertainty while infusing the narrative with humor and self-awareness, keeping it balanced. The medical terminology and procedures are explained naturally, making the memoir informative without losing its personal focus. Readers who enjoy memoirs centered on health journeys, emotional perseverance, and firsthand experiences with illness will appreciate the author’s straightforward, personal voice. The strongest sections are often the quieter moments when Rebecca reflects on her identity and expectations, and how quickly life can change after a diagnosis. Never Knew I Wanted to Be a Breast Cancer Survivor will especially appeal to readers seeking a personal perspective on breast cancer from someone navigating it at a younger age. Rebecca's sincerity allows each experience to speak for itself.
